<p><strong>Department</strong>: SPEECH & HEARING SCIENCES (BL-SPHS-IUBLA)</p><p><strong>Department Information</strong></p><p>The Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) is an important department in the College of Arts and Sciences (the College). It serves students and the community by advancing innovative basic and applied research in communication sciences and disorders for the purpose of knowledge acquisition, student education, professional training, and clinical practice. We offer educational experiences at the undergraduate and graduate levels; 8 of our faculty are Deaf and teach American Sign Language (ASL) at the undergraduate level. Many of our other faculty are clinicians in the areas of audiology and speech-language pathology, and many hold research PhDs.</p><p><strong>Job Summary</strong></p><p>The interpreter will effectively and efficiently interpret from ASL to spoken English and from spoken English to ASL and provide clear and effective communication for all ASL students, faculty, and staff. Under general supervision, this position functions as an interpreter/cultural facilitator between Deaf and hearing in a variety of settings (not limited to departmental offices, classrooms, office hours, meetings, lectures, study groups, and symposiums). The interpreting schedule will be discussed each Friday for the following week. We will work to solidify the interpreting schedule with as much advance notice as possible, allowing for necessary arrangements for other work commitments.</p><p><strong>Department-Specific Responsibilities</strong></p><ul><li>Provides interpreting in the classroom, in face-to-face student/instructor interactions, and in meetings.</li><li>Serves as a liaison in face-to-face faculty and staff interactions, departmental committee meetings and functions, and at various departmental/campus events.</li><li>Acts as a program consultant with the ASL coordinator.</li><li>Schedules and maintains records for department.</li><li>Team interpreting (ASL to English).</li><li>Deaf Culture course.</li><li>Team interpreting department meetings.</li><li>May require other interpreting needs as they arise.</li><li>Translates and proofreads in English.</li></ul><p><strong>Qualifications</strong></p><p><strong>EDUCATION</strong></p><ul><li><strong>Required</strong>: Bachelor's degree in American Sign Language Interpretation or related discipline.</li></ul><p><strong>WORK EXPERIENCE</strong></p><ul><li><strong>Required</strong>: 2 years of professional interpreting experience.</li><li><strong>Preferred</strong>: 5 years of professional interpreting experience at least 20 hours per week.</li></ul><p><strong>LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES</strong></p><ul><li><strong>Preferred</strong>: National ASL Interpreter Certification upon date of hire.</li></ul><p><strong>SKILLS</strong></p><ul><li><strong>Required</strong>: Strong verbal communication and listening skills.</li><li>Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills.</li><li>Excellent collaboration and team building skills.</li><li>Effective interpersonal skills.</li><li>Performs work independently with minimal supervision.</li></ul><p><strong>Working Conditions / Demands</strong></p><p>This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.</p><p><strong>Work Location</strong>: Bloomington, Indiana</p><p><strong>Advertised Salary</strong>: $45.00 per hour</p><p><strong>Work Hours</strong>: 20 - 29 hours per week.
