The medical assistant for the GI provider will function primarily as an MA for working up patients, entering records into the EMR system, scheduling procedures, and will also facilitating referrals to the program through the following:
<br/>
<br/>
<ul>
<li>
Serve as the point of contact for referring providers.
</li>
<li>
Schedule GI procedures, assuring that every referred patient will have a procedure date scheduled within 3 to 5 days for routine referrals.
</li>
<li>
3 days from the referral for semi-urgent cases.
</li>
<li>
Urgent referrals will be done on the same day or the next day, with physician approval *Coordinate the pre-procedure care including:
</li>
<ul>
<li>
Triggering preauthorization for the required procedure.
</li>
<li>
Contact patients for instruction before the procedures.
</li>
<li>
Requesting additional information from referring physicians if needed.
</li>
<li>
Review patients’ medications list and identify any medications that require attention or medications that need to be stopped before the procedure.
</li>
<li>
Identify patients who may need a clinic visit prior to the procedures. Coordinate the internal process of patient navigation within.
</li>
<li>
Instruction for directions to the hospital or the clinic.
</li>
</ul>
<li>
Sending procedure findings or pathology reports to the referring physician.
</li>
<li>
Scheduling patients for follow-up clinic visits at the clinic if needed.
</li>
<li>
Respond to any patient’s concerns regarding the pre-, peri, and post-procedure care and inform the physician to follow up on these concerns.
</li>
<li>
As needed, serve as Medical Assistant, duties may include:
</li>
<ul>
<li>
Perform routine patient care responsibilities ex. rooming and vital signs.
</li>
<li>
Note the primary complaint/reason for the visit.
</li>
<li>
Collect patient histories and enter medications into the medical record.
</li>
<li>
Maintain patient and service rooms in a neat and orderly condition.
</li>
</ul>
<li>
Fulfill clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include: scanning patient medical records; obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information; completing forms/requisitions as needed.

Requirements

<ul>
<li>
High school diploma/G.E.D. and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
</li>
<li>
Two years of previous Medical Assistant experience.
</li>
<li>
Basic Life Support certification (BLS).
</li>
<li>
Certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (CMA, RMA, NCMA, or CCMA). Must provide proof of the required certification.
</li>
