Job Description

<h3>TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:</h3><ul><li>Installs, modifies and maintains Local Area Network (LAN) components including computer hardware and software, cables, printers, and drivers;</li><li>Configures, repairs, and rebuilds computers and servers;</li><li>Instructs and/or assists end-users regarding using hardware, software and peripheral equipment, including setting up databases or files, and diagnosing and resolving password, e-mail and printing related problems either in person or over the phone;</li><li>Performs network backups and file restorations as required;</li><li>Contacts commercial vendors and state programmers regarding software problems and upgrades as required;</li><li>Contact the county data processing department to ensure LAN protocols are standardized with those of other county departments;</li><li>Orders new network equipment and/or software and checks filled orders for completeness and accuracy when authorized and as required;</li><li>Creates and maintains a variety of records and reports related to network installation, maintenance and user support activities;</li><li>Attends training classes and seminars to remain current in the field.</li></ul><h3>FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:</h3><ul><li>Good knowledge of LAN hardware, software and peripheral equipment</li><li>Good knowledge of the principles and practices of installing, modifying and maintaining local area network hardware, software and peripheral equipment;</li><li>Good knowledge of the operation of personal computer hardware and software;</li><li>Working knowledge of county programs, priorities and initiatives as they relate to information technology;</li><li>Ability to install, update and maintain LAN hardware, software and peripheral equipment;</li><li>Ability to diagnose hardware and software problems and devise a resolution to the problem;</li><li>Ability to understand and interpret complex oral instructions and/or written directions;</li><li>Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;</li><li>Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.</li></ul><h3>Job Qualifications</h3><p>Minimum Qualifications:</p><p>Either:</p><p>(a) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate's degree in computer science or computer information systems,</p><p>or closely related field and one (1) year of experience installing, modifying and maintaining a local area network; or</p><p>(b) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience as defined in (a); or</p><p>(c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).</p><p><strong>Notice to Candidates:</strong></p><p>This vacancy will be filled by a certified list provided by Mechanicville City Civil Service. Should no certified list be available, candidates appointed to this position will be serving in a provisional appointment in accordance with New York State Civil Service Law. The candidate must successfully complete a competitive examination and be eligible for appointment in accordance with Civil Service Law.</p><p>A fingerprint supported criminal history background check is required by law for employment in New York State schools.</p><p><strong>Position Start Date:</strong> 09/03/2024</p><p><strong>Application Deadline:</strong> 08/19/2024</p><p><strong>Civil Service Title:</strong> Network Technician</p>
