<h3>Job Summary:</h3><p>Barnes & Noble is the world’s largest retail bookseller and the leading retailer of content, digital media, and educational products. We’re proud to be an industry leader, consistently recognized for excellence in quality and customer service.</p><p>We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Backend Senior Systems Engineer proficient in Oracle SQL, PL/SQL, and a Unix or Linux environment. Preferably, the candidate should also have Python scripting knowledge. This role demands strong hands-on experience in daily development tasks and the leadership ability to guide the team in implementing efficient solutions. In this position, you will closely collaborate with the Java team to design database solutions, develop efficient and maintainable enterprise applications, and work on critical high-volume payment processing and order fulfillment applications.</p><p>As a Backend Senior Systems Engineer, you will have the opportunity to interact with multiple systems, gaining valuable business knowledge as we implement changes using Linux/Unix scripting, SQL, PL/SQL, integrate with Microservices using Python scripting, and migrate systems to the cloud.</p><p>The e-Commerce Fulfillment Systems team is a crucial part of the broader e-Commerce group.</p><p>In this position, you will collaborate internally with leaders in BN.com, Nook Digital department, B&N Press, Finance, Customer Service, Network, and Infrastructure teams. You will also collaborate externally with payment providers such as PayPal and Worldpay.</p><p>This role is perfect for you if you want to design backend applications and database schemas for backend batch jobs and Java applications and champion our IT transformation from legacy applications to the latest Microservice architecture. By managing the Fulfillment and Payment Gateway Systems, you will learn about the business while building new technical skills within a tenured team of IT professionals. You will gain hands-on exposure to building tools to integrate with Microservices, providing you with experience working with the latest architecture and technologies as we move to a cloud-based platform. In addition to joining a great company and IT team, you will have access to an excellent benefits package, including immediate access to a generous employee discount.</p><p>An employee in this position can expect a starting rate between $140,000 - $160,000 annually, depending on experience, seniority, geographic locations, and other factors permitted by law.</p><h3>What You Do:</h3><ul><li>Possess extensive hands-on experience with daily development tasks and the leadership ability to guide the team in implementing efficient solutions, including facilitating meetings, mentoring junior developers, and coordinating tasks.</li><li>Gather and translate business requirements into technical specification documents.</li><li>Participate in design discussions, offering input for building high-performance and robust applications.</li><li>Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to understand requirements, prioritize tasks, and implement effective solutions.</li><li>Create proof of concept or prototypes when necessary and contribute to technical and database/data model design.</li><li>Interface with users and developers to define and implement solutions to meet requirements.</li><li>Develop efficient and maintainable software to meet business user requirements.</li><li>Write code and test large-scale Oracle back-end database applications.</li><li>Conduct thorough code reviews to maintain system quality.</li><li>Conduct performance tuning and troubleshooting for large-scale eCommerce applications.</li><li>Ensure the development and execution of test plans to validate system requirements.</li></ul><h3>Knowledge & Experience:</h3><ul><li>Proficiency in UNIX shell scripting using bash/ksh, awk, sed, etc., with a preference for RHEL as the operating system.</li><li>Strong hands-on expertise in Oracle SQL, PL/SQL (For Oracle 19c), including triggers, procedures, functions, packages, XML query, and SQL Loader.</li><li>Proficiency in transferring large files using Sftp and loading them into the Oracle database.</li><li>Ability to troubleshoot/resolve data, system, performance, production, and systems issues with the offshore team.</li><li>Possess strong analytical, technical, oral, and written communication skills.</li><li>Problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities are essential.</li><li>Self-driven and proactive with a willingness to take ownership of projects from inception to completion with the ability to</li><li>Adaptability to Scrum/Agile methodologies.</li><li>A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.</li><li>Possess over 12 years of experience in Oracle Database development.</li></ul><h3>EEO Statement:</h3><p>Barnes & Noble is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer.
